Why do Some People Make It In Network Marketing and Others Don't?

Why do Some People Make It In Network Marketing and Others Don't?


 Recently I was listening to an interview with Frank Kern, the Internet Guru, and he was talking about why most people don't make it in Internet Marketing. It occurred to me the reasons he referenced could also be applied to network marketing as well.



So why don't people make it in network marketing? . . .
1) Some Never Start. In some cases, after a person signs up and receives a distributor kit, they simply forget about buying the kit and never actually make the commitment to start working their businesses as a business. Some people might never actually book one single party, or if they do get around to booking a party, they never get around to booking another one. Or, sometimes a person has great intentions about starting but somehow finds something else which takes priority. Also, many people are just plain scared to start a business and never actually take part in the the most important task in network marketing . . . talking to people.

2) Some Might Start and Then Hit an Obstacle and Quit. Anyone who starts a business, anywhere, in any field, will at some point face an obstacle. It's a given. At this point, a person must decide if he or she will continue running the business or quit. It's no different in network marketing and direct sales. The real difference between those who make it in network marketing and those who don't are simple: the types of thoughts a person has when facing an obstacle and how a person reacts to a setback is the sole determining factor between successful network marketing businesses and ones which never get off the ground.

Remember . . . thoughts determine whether we make it or not. Nothing else.

A person who won't make it will always think:

"This is never going to work."
"I'm no good at this."
"People aren't interested in this product."
"My timing is bad."
"The economy is bad."
"This is too much work."

A person who makes it will always think:

"How could I have avoided this?"
"How can I improve my business so this doesn't happen again?"
"What have I learned from this?"
"That was a fluke."
"One little bump in the road isn't going to stop me!"
"What good came out of this situation?"

Obstacles and challenges are a natural part of doing business and the unsuccessful network marketer, who focuses on setbacks as a way to justify quitting or stopping short, will never fully understand what a fantastic opportunity was sitting right there in their own laps.

On the other hand, the successful network marketer will seize the opportunity to start their own business, get to the top of their organizations, and confidently see everything through to the end no matter the obstacle or setback.

We don't have to do too much to be successful. It really is easy to make it!

We just have to . . .

* Start. This might sound too simple . . . and it is . . . but it's the most important step you'll ever make!

* Think differently about obstacles. Accept challenges as a normal part of business.

* Use setbacks to your advantage and think to yourself . . . . "How can I make money on this?"

* Keep going. And follow it through to the end.

Thanks To My Team!

My team is doing great and I totally appreciate their hard work.  Yes they are my down-line, but they run their own business and I am simply their support.  Daily I email all 25 women in my down-line with what I call my daily Rep Pep.  It is something I write up to inspire them, along with a sales tip for gaining new customers.

I read every day, authors that have made it in sales, like Joe Girard and Avon's own Lisa Wilber.  I want my 'team' to be motivate and aim for those stars of financial freedom.  I am also available  to them whenever they have a question or need advice or assistance.  It is part of my job.   I love this job, and I know that this will all pay off not only for me but for them!

This business can be discouraging at times.  Recruit prospects set appointments with you then don't show up.  You put together a kit so they can get their own Avon business off the ground.  You block off  time to meet, set up the appointment, even confirm it, and then the 'recruit' doesn't show up and doesn't bother to call.  Time is precious to us all, both the recruit and the rep. The recruit would not be pleased if she set aside time from her job, kids, etc and the rep signing her up did not show up or call to reschedule.  And yet they do it to us all of the time.

Today I had an appointment with a recruit  and she made my day!  She thanked me for getting back to her so quickly.  She initiated online contact with Avon yesterday early evening, and I received the information and called her within a very short period of time.  She was very impressed with the speedy reply and was eager to be a part of my team for that reason.  I needed that boost as my sales are not where I need them this campaign.

When I returned from the appointment I had an email asking me to 'please stop littering" a yard with my brochures, despite the fact that I toss on driveways. I am very careful to do so.  One little negative threatened to derail my entire positive afternoon.  But I work hard to remember what my idol in Avon says, go for the 'no'. She also says if you aren't being asked to stop by someone,  the you aren't trying hard enough.

So, while redirecting  my thoughts back to the positive rails, I received a great email from one of my down-line, thanking me for the daily emails and support, and for encouraging her with them, she said it energizes her. That  made my entire day!

I have such a rocking team! Thanks you very marvelous women!

The Golden Rule

One of the interesting things about Avon, beyond the fact that you can make a mint at it, is the way some folks treat the Avon Lady. 

I read a book recently called, "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Just The Avon Lady" and found it funny what this poor woman endured over the years just trying to make an honest living and keep food on her table.  As I've encountered similar situations as an Avon Lady, I've often wondered whatever happened to the Golden Rule.  You know the one, 'treat others as you would want to be treated'.  Let me explain.

In order to have a customer base one must get their brochures into as many hands as possible.  Not unlike 'The Door Store',  a bunch of printed ads that arrive weekly on the driveway apron or hanging on the mailbox in a plastic bag, we Avon reps need to mass distribute our catalogs.  Some reps chose to go door  to door and hang them.  This is fine if homes are close together and there are not a lot of steps.  Not to mention one needs a LOT of free time to do it this way if you plan to distribute any large number.  And it is a numbers game, to gain a few customers you end up distributing several hundred brochures.

Because I distribute 600-1000 books a campaign, I've taken to using the roll and toss method.  I learned it reading other rep's stories.  I put the brochures in the plastic bags, roll them, put a rubber band around them, then drive along throwing them on driveways like the paper boy would do.  Based on the number of customers I have, I would say this method works.  I have more this way than when I hung them on doors.  Also, once someone orders from me I include brochures in their orders and then will also hang the book  on their door.  Or if they call and specifically request that.

What amazes me is out of the thousands of brochures tossed between me, my sister and my mom, the few rather rude individuals we have encountered.  The newspaper and the weekly store ads are thrown on their driveway without issue.  But when we tossed a brochure in the same method, we receive a call or email stating that we are littering their yards.  My sister and I have each received 1 flat out nasty and mean call regarding this.  It isn't the many wonderful customers that we remember, it is the unkind, and often rude few that get to you and can discourage you and make you feel bad.

I got let go when the economy tanked, from a nice office job I had for 26 years.  I managed 2 more offices that also fell victim to the times. I could be sitting on unemployment or welfare, but I have chosen to try to make a living working for myself selling Avon.  It isn't easy work by any stretch but I like it.  I offer great customer service and I'm always nice and polite to everyone, even when someone is just plain rude.

Ease up on those folks trying to make an honest living next time you want to complain.  Be it the cashier working retail who is simply doing their job as they are trained, or someone like me that tosses some books hoping to gain a new customer.  You never know their story, what they are about, why they do what they do, or what they do for the community.  I work hard with Avon to help contribute to charity events in my township, have business license and volunteer my time and donate my products.  If  you don't want the service, a polite thanks but not interested will do.  Littering your yard? Please, no more so than the ads or the newspaper.  Treat  others as  you'd want to be treated, we pay taxes instead of living off of yours, cut us some slack.

OH and remember my name, because my business IS growing and one day I will be quite well off and you just never know when you might be needing my assistance. Believe me, I will remember yours!

Paying It Forward

One thing I believe is that every blessing we receive is meant to be shared with those in need. We pay it forward and it blesses others lives. We receive a second blessing in giving what we have been given.

Nothing will rip my heart apart more than seeing anyone suffer, especially a child. Every so often I will see one of those telethons for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the one that is doing all they can to cure cancer and other catastrophic illnesses that attack children. The stories will rip your heart out and many do not have a happy ending, though so many DO. St. Jude's never denies a child treatment based on their family's inability to pay, which makes them outstanding. They rely on donations to keep them up and running in the business of research and treatment to try to give these kids a fighting chance.

I was blessed that my kids grew up without these issues, and I give thanks often for this because they could just as easily have been one of those patients fighting for their life.

Avon has been a blessing to me, giving me extra income, allowing me to forge friendships with other women and giving me the chance at a financially secure, debt free future. One thing I want to always do is give back, pay it forward, in some way.

I am starting For The Children Friday. Everyone who buys online or submits their Avon order to me on Fridays, 20% of their total will be donated to St. Jude's. So once a month I will donate 20% of the total Friday sales, both online and regular phone/email sales for that month. Each Saturday I will post what the previous day's sales were, and each month I will post the monthly Friday totals, and a copy of the receipt for my donation so that if anyone has any concerns about my actually doing this, that way I am accountable.

Beginning tomorrow, For The Children Friday begins. Pray for this ministry of mine, that it might be very successful...for the children.

Mailbox Money - It Rocks!

Okay I am SO excited right now.  Something happened for the very first time today, something amazing, cool, makes me happy kinda something! MONEY IN THE MAIL!

It isn't the first time I've received a check from Avon, I get those bonus checks when I sign someone up and they do well in their first few campaigns.  But this check is different.  I made Unit Leader, so now I get a percentage bonus check on my downline's sales.  Not a huge percentage, but it slides based on how much their orders are, and if they are someone directly under me, or one generation down.  My downline is not huge yet, 21 representatives under me in my first, second and third generations, and not everyone is active.  But of those that did place orders in the last campaign, I got a small percentage.  I received a check for $25.23.

Now that might not seem like a lot to you, but it is a big hairy deal to me!  It is $25.23 I didn't have before, and had not planned on receiving.  It's BONUS money!  It isn't my commissions, it isn't recruitment bonus money, it's money for being a Unit Leader.  And it is total motivation for me!  The bigger my downline and the more and better they perform, the more the checks for leadership will become.  My idol in Avon recently posted that a leadership check of hers was over $9,600!!!! Not bad for a 2 week stretch, and that isn't counting her recruitment bonuses or her commissions of 50% of her sales.  Yes, there IS money in being in Avon, especially in leadership.

Some Day These Will Be Fond Memories

The day will come when I will be writing my story for others to read, of how I became THE Avon Lady in my area of town.  I just know it because failure is simply not an option for me.

In that story will be tales about evenings like last night.  Me, my sister and my mom were all watching DVR'd episodes of "Body Of Proof" while stamping and rolling Avon brochures.  We stamp and date them, then put them in the plastic 'what's new' bags.  Then we fold the top over and roll the brochure and put a rubber band around it.  When I say we 'toss' brochures now, I mean it.  We toss them from the moving car just like the paper boy would the daily news, right onto the driveways.  We had been walking them and hanging them on doors, but this was very time consuming.  I distributed 200 brochures yesterday in the morning in about 15 minutes time by driving slowly down the street and tossing them.  Today we tossed about 700 total for the 3 of us.  Now we are hoping for incoming orders!

Our day will come, down the road, when we will have an area/office to do all this in and  some helpers to assist with the dating, stamping and rolling.  For now we do what we have too.


Another memory will be like this morning.  See, I am an in home daycare provider, I watch kids in my home.  During the day I have a 3 month old, 1 year old and a 2 year old.  After school two 7 year olds join us.  I have not been diligent in getting brochures out in the past because I am busy all day with kids and I cannot take 3 little ones to walk brochures around.  Yesterday was the first time I rolled and tossed, an idea from another team's blog.  Today, it was me and sis, in the front seat with kids in the back seat, tossing out both sides of the car.  My Avon idol, Lisa Wilber, started out in the trailer park.  I am breaking ground with breakfast stains from little hands on my shirt, and baby formula 'burp' remains on my shirt and 3 car seats in the back seat of the car.  I love it!

It won't last forever!  Remember my name, because it will be all over Avon as a top sales rep and leader, one day soon!

Don't Reinvent The Wheel

I've been struggling  with my Avon business since the beginning.  Oh I get by just fine, the problem is coming up with fresh, creative ideas for sales and recruiting.  I finally had a light bulb moment when I realized I was trying to reinvent the wheel.

Instead of frying brain cells from over activity trying to dream up great ways to market, why not learn and use the things being shared by those who are smashing successes?  Like my Avon idol, Lisa Wilber, #6 in sales in the country and making over $300,000 a year in Avon (she openly shared her tax return when speaking to prove this).  Lisa shares on Facebook,  through her own website, blog and published books,  many fantastic ideas for growing this business.  It supports the "in business FOR yourself but not BY yourself" that Avon teaches us in training.  One of my favorite parts of district sales meetings is the recognition of other reps accomplishments and when they share their tips.  I borrowed one this past week in creating a newsletter to email to my customers.  A way to highlight sales and other things I believe they will want to know!  It also keeps me and Avon in the front  of  their mind.

The funny thing is, when reading what others  have done, or sharing ideas  with other reps, those  things seem to act like fertilizer in the creative part of my brain and next  thing I know I am coming up with new ideas!  Oh not original as I am sure somewhere another rep has already  thought them up but they are new to me and hopefully will be great additions.



Today I used Lisa Wilber's rule, that I am now  applying to my own life.  Everyone I have  contact with gets something from me and my business.  My business card, a brochure, a trial size product...whatever it takes to get my name and what I sell  into their hands.  I've opted to give everyone a brochure in a What's New bag (those clear plastic Avon bags for hanging on doors) along with a mini or trial size of a product or a lip balm or hand cream.  Oh and a flyer about selling Avon.  I also make sure I am wearing my business in the form of my perfume (Imari), jewelry (every one of my 6 rings, my necklace and earrings), and an Avon logo shirt.  No one has to guess with me.  Funny thing is today I had 6 compliments on my ring.  It is the snake ring from Avon, I have the watch as well.  3 people that commented received a brochure with a gift from me, a Naturals Mini Anti-bacterial Hand Gel.  One woman today (my waitress at lunch) asked for a brochure. She noticed my Avon logo shirt and jewelry and requested one.   She was getting one anyway but she didn't know that, her asking just made it easier to hopefully close a sale as we actually interacted and if they ask for one, they are for sure interested.

I am going to the store in a bit, I WILL have brochures with gifts in my purse.

Anyway, don't struggle trying to come up with great ideas.  Use what is tried and proven from others, it is why they share them!

Setting The Goals

Today has started off great. 3 of us Divas met up with a fellow Avon lady and good friend for breakfast. 2 hours of laughing, sharing and brain storming, my kind of morning meeting! I went to the credit union after and now I'm in front of my computer pouring over blogs and Facebook, soaking in the ideas while inwardly motivating myself. Scary, I know.

One of the blogs I read is by Lisa Wilber, my Avon idol. She started out in the trailer park, she is a millionaire now. Yes, she is lipstick diva, she sells vanity crack, like I do, but she has a 6 figure income and gets to travel the world. All because she believed in herself. I was reading her one blog post, Motivational vs. Instructional, and realized that part of my problem in life has been I didn't ever believe in myself, in my own ability to succeed. I spent most of my life buying the negative comments said about me rather than embracing the positive ones. Oh, she has another post, The Bad Stuff Is Easier To Believe, that goes hand in hand with the motivation one and with myself destructiveness at times.

My self confidence is something I have struggled with all of my life. Those few negative commentators throughout my life have done a number on me...because I allowed it. My wonderful, amazing honey told me something important that I've had to work hard not to do, but has made a difference in how I see me. He does not care for it when I speak negatively about myself. He sees me as pretty, sexy etc. If I focus on and verbalize the negative traits about myself, it's like telling him that he is wrong, and it will effect how he starts to see me. So, I no longer talk about my negative traits. We both know that they exist, we all have them. Instead I focus on the good stuff.

Right now, I am focused on my personal success. My mom and sister met one of the millionaires in Avon recently at a rally of sorts. I follow one on Facebook and her blog. These are real people, that really work hard and make a heck of a lot of money. I plan to be one of those women. Oh but not just one of them, one of the top 5 in the country. I know that I can, if I want it enough to work for it. I know that I am good at selling things, promoting etc, and I know what I want. I want to make 6 figures. I want to be a success. SO, I will be. I refuse to fail, or even consider failing.

I realize to do this I need to be organized. SURPRISE! I am very organized lately. The past few weeks I've been getting my business in order, purging stuff and setting up things so that I can find them. I have that side in order. On my closet door is a white board and bulletin board. I have a day planner, and I have several tote bags. One is for meetings, one is for product and samples. I also have a zip up organizer. I have paperwork in order and put away.

Next is to set reasonable goals. No use setting them if they cannot be achieved or that is just setting up to fail. My goals are written on the white board where I see them daily, in fact many times through the day. As those goals are checked off new ones will replace them.

I'm reading everything and anything written by successful Avon reps, why try to reinvent the wheel? They all do things similar and yet have many different ways of making this work. So, I am soaking it up and will try two or three ideas. If they work, great. If not, NEXT?

My first goal is to achieve President's club. To do that I need $10,100 in sales in a year. This is doable, it is on my horizon already, within my grasp and I WILL achieve it. As soon as I achieve this, I start making 40% commission on my sales, fixed, for the next 12 months. That also means I will make $4040 just on sales if I maintain $10,100 in the coming year of sales. Not bad. But NOT enough. My sales WILL be higher the next year because there are a lot of great perks with that recognition. Once I have those, I won't want to let go of them. This means some sub-goals that have to be met, like distributing brochures, and shameless self promotion wherever I go. Done. Shirts with the logo, buttons, carrying brochures, samples and business cards and giving them to anyone that is breathing. All on the board, all part of the making the goals.

I also have entered leadership, I'm building a downline. There are women in this business with several hundred people in their downline. With a larger downline comes more $$, promotions etc. The two areas combined, sales and leadership, are how one makes it to those 6 figure incomes.

Go ahead, laugh and make the jokes about Avon ladies and soap on a rope. The Lisa Wilbers of the world are laughing all the way to the bank with their millions in sales and profits. Be skeptical, because I, too, will be laughing as I cash those checks.

Time To Set Your GOALS!

Okay team,  and others, it is time to set some goals for the remainder of September.  We have 12 days left in this 9th month of the calendar year, let's make the most of it, shall we?

I want to have $600 in new orders this campaign, which goes  in on 9/27.  Via the web, phone, tossing brochures, or in person, I want that much in NEW business.  In order to do it by month's end, the 30th, I need $50 a day in new orders.  To do it by order day, I need $66 a day. 

I want 2 more recruits for September, so I need to get on and make some follow up calls and drop off mini-kits to addresses that have not returned my calls.

I want to give out 10 brochures with free deodorant this week. This  is an idea I found via my inspiration and Avon idol, Lisa M. Wilber.  She has days she dedicates to a particular product, then gives it out with a brochure to everyone she comes in contact with that day.  I LOVE this idea.  At the moment I have an entire case of deodorant so that is my product of choice to hand out.

Take one paper delivery bag, fill with 10 Avon brochures & samples or trial sizes, write on the bag "FREE Brochures & Samples, Just Ask!" and carry it with you every where you go. My $1 Cash And Carry Basket

Sharing a tip for my team/unit, The Lipstick Divas:

Make a $1 Cash & Carry Basket.  Get a cute basket from the store, or some type of easy carry container that is CUTE!  Inside stock it with $1 items from Avon.  Every campaign we have specials (check the back cover) of one or another item for $1  or .99 cents.  Buy $10 worth and start putting together a basket of said items.

When  you deliver your orders to customers, allow them to chose an item as a thank-you gift for their order, then also mention that if they want anything else, each item is $1.

Another great promotion, if you work outside of your home at another job  while building your Avon business, take that $1 basket to work.  Especially with the holidays not far off, mention that you have $1 stocking stuffer type items.

Anti-Aging Miracle
